Speedy must have been wild somewhere hot until somebody napped him for the pet trade and England. He would love to go back, I'm sure, but apparently they can't because they all carry different diseases and will introduce tortoise plagues to the locals if sent back to a different region from the one they came from.
I had a long conversation with the tortoise lady at Linton Zoo, who says the high death rate among pet tortoises wasn't due to cold at all but to exposure to unfamiliar germs picked up from other tortoises.
