This is my spidermonkey userpic because I've spent 3 hours this evening sitting in Accident and Emergency with him.
We were cycling home from the allotment around 6pm, looking forward to a quite evening of TV and snacks, carefully taking the safe route over the cycle bridge rather than straight down Mill Rd. Spider was bombing down the bridge way too fast, as is normal. He must have been too near the side because, when he needed to look at some traffic on his right, the handlebars swung left and the end got stuck in the railings. Grown up monkeys were too far behind to see, but squirrel says the bike turned a somersault. Spider slid many yards along the ground. The damage is a broken little finger, sprained wrist and LOT of grazes ('minor and major abrasions' according to A and E, where 'major' means he'll need the practice nurse to change the dressings on them in few days). Under the circumstances, this probably counts as lucky. He was wearing a helmet, had the sense to fall with his arms crossed over his face, palms inwards, and the bike didn't hit him when it came down. The bike is a write off.
On the plus side, several people immediately stopped to help, and a nice woman on Devonshire Rd even let us sit in her living room while musique_monkey went for the car. Not so impressed by the louts who shouted at us for being in the way, or the idiot who thought it was a good time to joke about the broken bike.
Spider was very brave during a long, long wait at the hospital (though he did get gas and air while they set the finger, which he seemed to enjoy). At the moment, the main concern is that it all hurts, but the worst of it is, it's his left hand, so he still has to to writing when school goes back, but it'll be weeks before he can get back to guitar or violin. Right now the right hand looks worse, being swathed in bandages due to having lost most of the skin on the back, but that should recover faster than the finger.
Tomorrow is an INSET day, so no school, and musique_monkey had already booked a day's holiday so we could have a nice outing. Which will come in handy for getting the bike fixed, or probably replaced, getting spider a tetanus shot if the GP reckons he needs one, and maybe, maybe, a small quiet outing to somewhere very very safe.
Then, on Tuesday week, we're off to the fracture clinic for follow-up. Unless things have changed since he broke his collar bone, that could take most of the day.
So, given that I was hopelessly behind before all this, I probably won't be around much for a while...
