The 3 monkeys who are old enough for site insurance have been volunteering on the North West Cambridge archaeological dig.  This is our post hole and what came out of it.

It's supposed to be a Roman site and the group of post holes is Romanly rectangular, but the stuff in it is mostly early iron age pottery--really gritty, grainy stuff like rock porridge.  Plus one shiny smooth smart bit that looks like the later, Roman pots, but probably isn't.  The big lump is probably a quern.  Unless it's a rock.  I'm really looking forward to finding out what someone eventually decides this all means.  We dug some other holes too, but only this one had loads of stuff in it

The dig site is right behind the house.  Well, OK, it's all the way along the motorway from Madingley Rd up to us, but some of it is right behind our house.

There's more digging next week and a Roman Street Party--see link above--on March 23rd.  Let us know if you'd like to meet there or drop round to the Monkey House afterwards.

Am so chuffed that we found prehistory. Unexpected prehistory.

Looks really interesting, and we'd love to have been able to get to the street party - sadly otherwise engaged that weekend.

If plans change, let us know. You'd be welcome to stay over.

Apparently 'the boss' thought they were going to uncover a major roman market - so far just odd bits of farming / military stuff with unexpected sprinkles of pre-roman....
