Here's a quote from my A-Level english class (essay on the many religious holidays we have / enjoy in Bavaria, and if they ought to be abolished).
One of the kids, with all the wisdom an 18-year-old can muster, argued against abolishment. He was all for respecting tradition, and having these religious holidays "is such an old tradition that even I can't remember when it started".
Wow.
And triple WOW for Cloud Atlas - talking about "can't remember when it started". I mean the book. I might not dare watch the film. Will have a look at the translation some day - but that can't work, can it? There is no way anyone can make German do what Zach'ry and centuries do to English on Ha-why. Amazing.
