today's question

Why am I reluctant to take creative writing advice from someone who signs off emails to her students with the words, 'Happy Solstice, dear friends!'?

Clue: I do not have a problem with celebrating the winter solstice. (Especially at this time of year.)

Why yes, I am supposed to be marking assignments now. What makes you ask?

It's the 'dear friends', I think. there is something very patronising about that.

Exactly. I have met this woman once face-to-face and interacted with her very briefly via my first assignment. Many of her 'dear' student 'friends' will have had even less contact than that. I do not know her. She does not know me. Grrrr.
