Believe it or not

Today is the Feast of Saint "Doubting" Thomas the Apostle. (According to Got Medieval, the Catholic Church has therefore set this day aside for thinking "Holy crap, is it really almost Christmas again? Surely not!")

A healthy dose of doubt is a wonderful thing.  What will you be doubting today?

That Home Delivery Network will achieve Amazon's goal of delivery before Christmas.

And on a more metaphysical level, that we can ever truly know ourselves. But as an approximation is sufficient for most everyday purposes, I think I can live with that :-)

But are you sure?

Personally, I'm ok with amazon, but I doubt that I'm going to get my OU assignment written in time as well as marking everyone elses. Nor am I convinced that spidermonkey has brushed his teeth this morning, though he swears he has. I could prove a negative hypothesis by seeing whether his toothbrush is wet, but I don't think I can be bothered...

Even if the toothbrush is wet, it's possible that he is going to extreme lengths to conceal a lack of toothbrushing, like wetting the brush, eating a bit of toothpaste (for that minty smell), and making appropriate bathroom noises, but not actually brushing.

Not that I would think that of him for a moment, but, um, it is something I used to do when I was about ten... and now my teeth are crap and I've spent over a thousand quid on dentistry over the years.

Hence the negative hypothesis. I can prove he hasn't brushed his teeth, but I can never prove he has. Logically, there's something not right about that, but I can't work out what it is.
