woolymonkey: (wtf?)

Well, he came home, but he's injured and now he's at the vet's for overnight observation and pain meds.  Spider found him outside the kitchen door because he couldn't get through the cat flap.   Vet suspects a fractured pelvis but we have to wait for x-rays, which they can't do until tomorrow morning as he needs to be stable enough for a general anaesthetic.  On the whole, they think he'll probably be OK, but it depends on what exactly is damaged.  Basically, cat bones will mend from anything,  but organ damage would be more of a problem.

Spider was superb.  Brought Leicester in, phoned me (cue personal best cycling time from Downing St to Girton), phoned the vet and booked us in, and took care of Leicester while waiting for me.  He says Humbug was good too and gave him a much-needed wash.  (Leicester, that is, though Spider could probably use a shower soon.)

We don't know what happened, but probably he was hit by a vehicle and then he was lying in a field for a while because he's got harvest mites on his scuffed knees.  All this, and the fact that he's dented rather than flattened, suggests that it may have been a vehicle on the farm track behind the house rather than a car on the road in front.  Either way, he's dragged himself a heck of a long way to get home without being able to climb over anything.  I'm amazed I didn't see or hear him yesterday when I went looking. That is one tough kitty.

More news tomorrow when the vet has seen the x-rays.  In the meantime, please send healing vibes.

Oh, poor Leicester! And well done Humbug (oh, and Spider).

We are vibing vigorously; California is big on vibes. Also, cats are tough. But you know this. Crawling all that way... He is mighty, and will come through this, I deem.

Mighty. Yes. Stupid bloody cat thought he could take on a combine harvester or something.

Oh the poor thing! If the vet's broadly positive that's good, they tend to be good judges of this sort of thing (understandably). Good luck in any case.

And well done to Spider for acting so promptly and sensibly.

We didn't see the actual vet because she was in the middle of doggy dental work, but the vet nurse checked Leicester over and took him in to theatre so the vet could have a quick look at him while she was still in there. So it was all a bit rushed, but more encouraging than not. And now we wait. But at least we know where he is and that he's comfortable and getting the right care.

Oh poor boy! And good job Spider. Your son sounds like such a good kid.

I will light a candle for Bastet for Leicester. (Penknife's old cat, Hephaistion, lived up to his namesake by doing much the same thing, involving three days missing and coming home with a shattered hip and tread marks. Unlike his namesake, he recovered beautifully and lived to ripe old age.)

Thank you. Zil always swore she was a manifestation of Bastet. I always imagined Bastet would manifest slimmer and less guinea-pig coloured, but what do apes know?

Yes, Spider is doing well. I think he really sympathises with Leicester because he's had more than his own share of accidents and panic dashes to Accident and Emergency. Let's hope he's now matured to the point where he just helps cope with other people's accidents.

Poor Leicester! Yeah, my Hephaistion was hit by a car and broke his hip, and he recovered nicely; he was left with a little bit of a limp, but it never seemed to slow him down. I will think good cat-healing thoughts!

Thank you. It's good to hear happy cat recovery stories right now. Leicester with a limp would still outrun Humbug.

Oh, poor Leicester! A tough boy indeed. I am sending many healing thoughts his way. (FWIW, I acquired Grendel many years ago after he survived a close encounter with a car. Scary as all get-out, and, as you might guess from the name, he was not a particularly friendly or vet-compliant cat, but he was fine - lived for years, terrorizing everyone in the household.)

Healing vibes heading his way. One of my cats was hit by a vehicle and went missing for 6 days. When she finally managed to crawl back, the vet had to pin her bones back together. She was around 4 years old at the time - and lived to be 18! They are far tougher than they look...

Went in today to take him his favourite blankie. He was purrily appreciative and looked much happier than yesterday though he can't stand. Still waiting to hear if he's fixable, but the vet is more optimistic than pessimistic.
