Well, he came home, but he's injured and now he's at the vet's for overnight observation and pain meds.  Spider found him outside the kitchen door because he couldn't get through the cat flap.   Vet suspects a fractured pelvis but we have to wait for x-rays, which they can't do until tomorrow morning as he needs to be stable enough for a general anaesthetic.  On the whole, they think he'll probably be OK, but it depends on what exactly is damaged.  Basically, cat bones will mend from anything,  but organ damage would be more of a problem.

Spider was superb.  Brought Leicester in, phoned me (cue personal best cycling time from Downing St to Girton), phoned the vet and booked us in, and took care of Leicester while waiting for me.  He says Humbug was good too and gave him a much-needed wash.  (Leicester, that is, though Spider could probably use a shower soon.)

We don't know what happened, but probably he was hit by a vehicle and then he was lying in a field for a while because he's got harvest mites on his scuffed knees.  All this, and the fact that he's dented rather than flattened, suggests that it may have been a vehicle on the farm track behind the house rather than a car on the road in front.  Either way, he's dragged himself a heck of a long way to get home without being able to climb over anything.  I'm amazed I didn't see or hear him yesterday when I went looking. That is one tough kitty.

More news tomorrow when the vet has seen the x-rays.  In the meantime, please send healing vibes.

Oh the poor thing! If the vet's broadly positive that's good, they tend to be good judges of this sort of thing (understandably). Good luck in any case.

And well done to Spider for acting so promptly and sensibly.

We didn't see the actual vet because she was in the middle of doggy dental work, but the vet nurse checked Leicester over and took him in to theatre so the vet could have a quick look at him while she was still in there. So it was all a bit rushed, but more encouraging than not. And now we wait. But at least we know where he is and that he's comfortable and getting the right care.
